Castillo de Colomares. In the hills between Funegirola and Benalmádena is a castle that looks like the bold castillian fortresses and palaces of the Renaissance. Castillo de Colomares was built to commemorate Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America, but dates back to the 1980s and 90s. It is a work of a local businessman and two builders, and is a tribute to Spain’s national architecture, a bit of Byzantine, Romanian, Moorish and Gothic design. It’s not really a castle, but closer to a monument dedicated to Christoffer Columbus’s life and adventure. The entire building is carefully decorated with carved symbolic figures representing the discoveries as well as the coat of arms of the Catholic monarchs and other nobles who participated in the expeditions.
