When you pick up a hire car in Spain, the rental company will typically block a security deposit on your credit card. This is a pre-authorisation hold, not a charge, but it still locks up a chunk of your spending limit.

How the deposit hold works

A pre-authorisation simply reserves a set amount against your credit card limit. No money leaves your account, but the amount is temporarily frozen and unavailable for you to spend during your trip. When you return the vehicle undamaged, the rental company releases the hold, restoring your full credit limit.

The exact deposit amount depends on the car size:

• Economy and Compact cars: 300–600 EUR
• Family cars and Station Wagons: 600–1,000 EUR
• SUVs and Premium models: 1,000–2,500 EUR

Why debit and virtual cards fail

Traditional rental companies enforce strict card requirements at the counter:

• Credit cards only: If you use a debit card, the deposit is actually frozen from your bank balance rather than your credit limit, which can take weeks to return to your account.
• Physical cards: You must present the physical card. Virtual cards (like Wise or Revolut digital cards) and phone wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are routinely rejected.
• Main driver's name: The credit card must be issued in the exact name of the main driver. Cards belonging to spouses or colleagues are not accepted.
