Car Rental Deposit in Spain: Why 300–1,500 EUR Is Blocked (Not Charged) and How to Rent Without One

You arrive at the rental counter and the agent blocks 800 EUR — or 1,200 EUR — on your credit card. It has not been charged. But it is gone from your available balance for the duration of your trip.

Here is exactly what is happening and how to avoid it.

Hold vs. charge — the key distinction

When you collect the car, the rental company places a pre-authorisation on your card. This is not a debit. No money leaves your account; the card network simply reserves that amount against your available credit limit. When you return the car in the agreed condition, the company cancels the authorisation and the full limit is restored — no refund needed because nothing was ever taken.

The amount depends on the vehicle class:

  • Economy / compact: 300–600 EUR
  • Standard / family: 600–1,000 EUR
  • SUV: 1,000–1,500 EUR
  • Premium: 1,500–2,500 EUR

Book with zero-excess full insurance and many suppliers will reduce the hold significantly or drop it entirely.

Why the card rules matter

Rental desks in Spain require a physical credit card in the main driver's name. Each part of that matters:

Credit card, not debit. With a credit card the hold reduces your spending limit but leaves your bank balance untouched. With a debit card, the same amount is frozen from your actual account — and can stay frozen for two to three weeks after a clean return.

Physical card, not a digital one. The terminal must read a chip. Virtual card numbers (Revolut, Wise, N26 digital-only), phone wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay), and prepaid cards are routinely refused at the deposit step — even when the booking itself was paid with them.

Main driver's name only. The card name must match the booking and the licence. A partner's card or a company card in a colleague's name will not be accepted.

What to bring:

A physical Visa or Mastercard credit card, issued in the main driver's name, with enough available limit to cover both the deposit hold and your holiday spending.

How long does the hold last?

The rental company releases the authorisation on the day the car is returned. Your bank then controls how quickly your limit is restored — typically 5 to 14 working days on a credit card, sometimes longer. The rental company cannot speed this up; if the hold lingers past the expected window, follow up with your bank directly.
