Can You Rent a Car in Spain With a Debit Card?
Yes, you can rent a car in Spain with a debit card. The awkward part is that not every debit card works, and not every rental rate treats debit cards the same way.
The desk problem usually starts when a cheap-looking booking still expects a credit card for a large security hold. You arrive with a debit card, the supplier says the card is not suitable for the deposit, and suddenly the "cheap" car needs a more expensive insurance upgrade.
Here is the plain version before you book.
The debit card that usually works
Most Spanish car hire suppliers that accept debit cards want a physical Visa or Mastercard debit card. The card should be:
- In the main driver's name
- Valid for the whole rental period
- Presented physically at collection
- Able to cover any payment or hold required by the rental terms
That last point matters. A debit card can be accepted for payment and still be a problem if the rental company wants to block a large deposit. With a credit card, the hold reduces your credit limit. With a debit card, the hold can tie up money from your bank account.
Cards that usually cause trouble
Do not rely on a virtual card, a prepaid card, or a phone wallet at the rental desk.
Apple Pay, Google Pay, one-time virtual card numbers, and prepaid travel cards are commonly refused for car hire deposits in Spain, even if they work perfectly well for hotels, restaurants, or online shopping. Some fintech cards work when you bring the physical card, but the in-app virtual version is not the same thing at a rental counter.
Also check the name. If the booking is in your name but the card belongs to your partner, parent, or company, many suppliers will refuse it unless their terms specifically allow a different payer.
Why debit cards often mean full cover
The reason is risk. On a basic rental rate, the supplier normally protects itself with an excess and a deposit hold. If the excess is 1,200 EUR, the desk may want to pre-authorise a similar amount before releasing the car.
With a debit card, that is messy for everyone. The hold may fail, or it may remove a large amount from your available bank balance until the rental is returned and your bank releases it.
That is why many debit-card-friendly rentals require a zero-excess or full-cover rate. If the excess is removed, the supplier has less reason to block a large deposit. The headline price can look higher than the basic rate, but it avoids the classic airport calculation: pay extra insurance now or find a credit card you do not have.
Booking online is not the same as collecting the car
This is where people get caught.
An online booking form may accept your debit card for the reservation payment. That does not automatically mean the local desk will accept the same card for the security deposit.
Before you book, read the payment section of the rental conditions, not just the payment page. Look for these details:
- Whether debit cards are accepted at collection
- Which card brands are accepted
- Whether prepaid, virtual, or digital wallet cards are excluded
- Whether the card must be in the main driver's name
- Whether a deposit or pre-authorisation is required
- Whether debit-card rentals require full cover or zero excess
If the conditions say "credit card required at pick-up", treat that literally. A debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo may still be refused.
The easier route with RentaCarBestPrice:
Every RentaCarBestPrice rental includes Full Cover as standard, so we do not block a large security deposit on your card at collection. Bring your valid licence, ID or passport, booking details, and a physical debit or credit card in the main driver's name, and the handover stays simple.
What to bring if you do not have a credit card
Pack for the desk rules, not for what seems reasonable after a flight.
Bring your physical debit card, your driving licence, your passport or national ID card, and your booking confirmation. Make sure the card name matches the main driver exactly enough to avoid an argument. If your bank app has international payments, card-present payments, or large transactions switched off by default, turn them on before you travel.
If you use Revolut, Wise, N26, or another app-based bank, bring the physical card. Do not assume the virtual card in your phone wallet will be accepted.

The simple rule
You can rent a car in Spain without a credit card, but only if the rental conditions match the card you actually carry.
A safe debit-card booking has three things: a physical Visa or Mastercard debit card in the main driver's name, clear permission to use that card at collection, and a cover package that avoids a large deposit hold.
