Automatic or Manual Car Hire in Spain?
Spanish hire fleets used to be almost entirely manual. That is changing: most agencies now stock more automatics than before, especially at airports like Alicante and Valencia. Manuals are still easy to find in the cheaper classes, but if you only drive automatic, the real issue is not whether they exist — it is that the good ones go first.
Why automatics cost more and sell out
Automatics are the most popular choice for many visitors, so they disappear from the available options earliest. What remains is often a larger class or a weaker deal. That demand premium sits on top of a higher purchase cost for the rental company, which also feeds into the daily rate.
The gap varies by season, airport and car class. Compare like-for-like cars, not just the first daily price shown. In July, August, Easter and school holidays, the pressure is sharper. Waiting until you land is the worst option. If automatic is essential, book as soon as your dates are firm — weeks ahead outside peak, longer for summer or larger vehicles.
Hybrids and electric cars are always automatic, so they can widen the search. A hybrid is often the simpler route for a flexible trip; an EV only makes sense if charging fits your itinerary.
Licence and road reality
On EU licences, code 78 restricts you to automatic transmission. That rule applies in Spain too. If your licence has it, you cannot legally take a manual, regardless of what is cheaper at the desk.
If you can drive a manual confidently, Spanish roads are fine either way. An automatic mainly helps in stop-start city traffic or if you are used to driving on the left and would rather not relearn gear changes on unfamiliar roundabouts. Do not pick a manual just to save money if any named driver is uneasy with it.
