Car Hire Excess in Spain Explained: What CDW Really Covers

You have found a great deal online, booked your rental car, and you are ready to enjoy the Spanish sun. But when you arrive at the rental desk, the agent asks a stressful question: "Would you like to buy our extra insurance to cover the excess?"
If you are confused about what Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) actually covers and whether that rental desk upsell is worth it, you are not alone. We see this confusion every day, and we want to explain exactly how car hire excess works in Spain.
What is car hire excess?
Most rental cars in Spain come with basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection included in the price. However, "waiver" does not mean you are fully covered.
Basic CDW only limits your financial liability if the car is damaged or stolen. You are still responsible for paying a portion of the repair costs. This remaining portion is the excess (or deductible).
If the repair bill is 500 EUR and your excess is 1,000 EUR, you pay the full 500 EUR. If the repair bill is 3,000 EUR, you only pay the 1,000 EUR excess, and the rental company covers the rest.
How much is the excess in Spain?
For a typical car hire in Spain, the excess is not a small fee. Depending on the car class and the rental company, the excess ranges between 800 EUR and 1,500 EUR. For larger premium vehicles or SUVs, this deductible can exceed 2,000 EUR.
When you collect the car, the rental company will place a security hold for this exact excess amount on your credit card.
Credit Card Hold Warning:
The security deposit is blocked on your credit card, not charged. However, this hold will reduce your available credit card limit for your entire holiday. You must present a physical credit card in the main driver's name; debit cards or mobile wallets are often rejected at the counter.
What basic CDW excludes (The hidden details)
Even if you are willing to risk paying the excess, standard CDW has major exclusions. Basic coverage typically excludes:
- Tyres and wheels
- Windscreens, windows, and mirrors
- Undercarriage (oil sump, exhaust, chassis)
- Roof damage
- Lost or damaged keys
- Misfueling (putting petrol in a diesel car)
If you return the car with a cracked windscreen or a flat tyre, you will be charged the full repair cost, regardless of the Collision Damage Waiver.
The counter upsell vs. third-party insurance
To avoid this risk, you have two options:
1. Buy Super CDW at the rental counter
The rental desk agent will offer a "Super Collision Damage Waiver" (SCDW) or "Full Damage Waiver". This reduces your excess to zero and eliminates the credit card hold. However, it is expensive. Desk insurance typically costs 15 EUR to 25 EUR per day—often doubling the cost of your rental.
2. Buy third-party excess cover beforehand
You can purchase standalone car hire excess insurance from a third-party company before you travel. This usually costs 2 EUR to 12 EUR per day. In the event of damage, you pay the rental company up to the excess amount, and then claim that money back from your third-party insurer. While much cheaper, it still requires you to have a credit card with enough limit for the security hold at the counter.
The stress-free alternative
If you do not want to choose between a costly counter upsell and having thousands of euros blocked on your card, there is a better way.
