Car Hire Stade

Stade is located in the north-German state of Lower Saxony – approx 50 km west of Hamburg – and has about 46,000 inhabitants (2008). River Schwinge, which is a tributary of the Elbe, flows through the city. Stade is known since the 800’s and possibly North Germany’s oldest city. It received township in 1209 – and was at that time a member of the influential Hanseatic League. In the first part of the 1600s the city was alternately in Danish and Swedish hands – and in the entire period from 1645 to 1719 was Stade a Swedish city.

Among the architectural goodies in the old downtown area (Altstadt), we find the two medieval churches (with later extensions) St. Cosmae and St. Wilhedi. Moreover Altstadt in itself an attraction, where among others timbered houses in the old Hanseatic port provides a comprehensive, historical architectural environment.

It is at all an interesting feature of the cityscape that the various historical eras can “read” in architecture. Thus today we can – in addition to “Hansestadt” – also experience inter alia, “Swedish Town” and “Baroque City” Stade. And yet there remains of the ancient fortresses as the Swedes built in the middle of the 1600s.

Nearest international airport is Hamburg Airport, located approx 64 km east / northeast of Stade.
