Murcia is a city in south-eastern Spain, the capital and most populous city of the Autonomous Community of Murcia Region, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of 442,573 inhabitants in 2009 (about one third of the total population of region). The population of the metropolitan area was 689,591 in 2010. It is located at Segura-River, in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with a mild climate with hot summers, mild winters and relatively low rainfall.
Murcia was founded by the emir of Cordoba Abd ar – Rahman II in 825 AD named Mursiyah and is now primarily a service town and a university. Highlights for visitors include the Cathedral of Murcia and a number of baroque buildings, renowned local cuisine, Holy Week procession artwork by the famous Murcia sculptor Francisco Salzillo, and the Fiestas de Primavera (Spring Festival). The city, capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia called Europe’s orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and as a fruits, vegetables and flowers producer and exporter.
Murcia has many historic buildings and churches to show off. Although Murica mostly lives off tourism, it is a relatively quiet and peaceful city to holiday in. Whatever the season you will never experience mass tourism in the city. The biggest tourist attraction in the city, which is also a landmark of Murcia, is the impressive cathedral Santa Maria. It was built around the 1400s, but the tower was not completed until 1792. The cathedral has a mixture of several styles, including Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Old Town is also well worth a visit with its quaint narrow streets. Other attractions include Salzillo Museum with its beautiful sculptures and park area of El Valle, located on the hill behind sentrum. The view from the top is incredibly beautiful.
There are many beautiful sandy beaches in the region. By car it takes only 30 min. running from Murcia to one of the coast seaside towns.
The nearest airport is Murcia San Javier Airport which is 45 km. southeast of downtown.
