Carcassonne is located in the southern part of France, just north of the Pyrénées. It is the capital of the Ministry of Aude, which in turn belongs to Languedoc-Roussillon region.

The river Aude divides the city, and the oldest, upper part – Cité de Carcassonne – is among France’s major tourist attractions. The whole town appears namely as a museum for befestningsarkitekturen in the Middle Ages (ca. 500-1300 AD), in that most of the historic buildings have been preserved within intact, double walls. Cité de Carcassonne has entirely been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1997.

On the other side of the river is the lower, newer town Ville Basse. This is where most of the nearly 50,000 inhabitants of the city live, and it is also this district which is in expansion. The two districts are connected by bridges Pont Vieux and Pont Neuf. Through Ville Basse yesterday published another of France’s major sights – the 240 km long Canal du Midi, which connects the Mediterranean with the Atlantic. The canal was opened already in 1681, and also the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nearest Airport – Aéroport Carcassonne Salvaza – is about 3 km outside the city.
